What Is a Facelift?
Also known as rhytidectomy, a facelift is a surgical procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. Facelift procedures vary widely in magnitude or scope, but all serve to tighten the tissues of the face and neck, restoring a more youthful appearance and contour. Most patients requesting evaluation for a facelift feel that their facial features do not reflect their youthful spirit and energy level.
The Benefits of a Facelift
Ultimately, a facelift can allow you to turn back the hands of time to better reflect your youthful personality. If you are interested in a facelift, consult with your Associates in Plastic Surgery surgeon to determine which procedure is best for you.
A facelift offers a number of aesthetic benefits. It can be used to address noticeable jowls forming on the face, and it can also help to redefine your jawline, chin, and neck. Overall, it helps to tighten and smooth the skin without giving it the appearance of being stretched out or unnatural.
The Facelift Procedure
Facelifts are performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. More types of facelifts can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation.
Incisions will be made behind the ears to ensure they are well-hidden once fully healed. The tissue will be lifted, excess tissue will be trimmed, and the remaining tissue will be tightly sutured in place. Once closed, the incisions will be carefully dressed.
Healing After Your Facelift
Special compression dressings will be provided for your facelift recovery period and will need to be worn over the neck and head overnight. These dressings will be removed during a follow-up visit. The sutures used to seal the incisions will remain in place for a few days to around a week and will also be removed during a follow-up.
Swelling and discomfort are normal and can be managed through medication. Most people will need to take around two weeks to recover from their facelift. After this time, most normal activities can be resumed. However, strenuous activities such as exercising and heavy lifting will need to be limited for at least of 10 days after surgery to allow time to heal.
